In its New Educational Policy of 1986, the Indian government stipulated that, in addition to possessing minimum academic qualifications, candidates must also pass a comprehensive test designed specifically to determine eligibility for appointment as Lecturers/Assistant Professors in order to maintain uniform teaching standards throughout the country.
