BMW i5 Reviews- BMW is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the 2024 i5 sedan, a mid-size option positioned between the highly acclaimed i4 and the top-tier i7 flagship. Similar to its counterparts, the i5 aims to deliver an enjoyable driving experience while offering luxurious amenities. The i5 will be available in two powertrain options. The first is the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 model, boasting 335 horsepower.
For those seeking more power and all-wheel-drive capability, the dual-motor M60 xDrive variant provides an impressive 590 horsepower. During our test drive of a prototype in France, we were impressed by its sportiness and pleased with its advanced onboard technology. With an increasing number of luxury electric vehicles entering the market, such as the Genesis Electrified G80, Mercedes-Benz EQE, Porsche Taycan, and Tesla Model S, the i5 faces competition in attracting affluent buyers who prioritize eco-friendly options.

Features
If you find 120 mph to be insufficient, the i5 M60 xDrive with all-wheel drive has motors on both the front and rear axles. The rear motor produces 340 hp, while the front motor generates 261 hp. Together, they generate a torque of 795 newton-meters, which increases to 820 when “boost” or launch control is activated.

The maximum speed is limited to 143 mph. The power consumption ranges from 20.6 to 18.2 kilowatt-hours per 62 miles according to claims. To activate the almost unnecessary boost feature on both cars, simply use the shift paddle located near the left steering wheel spoke. Pulling the paddle for more than 0.8 seconds will trigger maximum acceleration. At the same time, the drive sound changes for those who enjoy simulated noise inside the cabin.
Power & Performance
There are two i5 models available, starting with the eDrive40 that produces 335 horsepower. This model drives the rear wheels using a single electric motor. The M60 xDrive model, on the other hand, is hotter and has an additional electric motor on the front axle, resulting in a combined power output of 590 hp.
When we had the chance to test drive an i5 M60 prototype, we were impressed by its agile handling, high levels of grip when cornering, and powerful dual-motor powertrain. According to BMW, the more powerful powertrain can accelerate the i5 from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, which seems entirely believable based on our evaluation.

Charging & Battery Life
BMW claims that the i5 is equipped with an 84.3-kWh battery pack located underneath the floorboards. This battery pack has enough capacity to power the eDrive40 model for a distance of 295 miles before needing to be recharged. On the other hand, the M60 model, which has dual motors, is less efficient and can travel an estimated distance of 256 miles on a single charge.
The i5’s battery pack can be connected to DC fast-charging stations and is capable of charging from 10 to 80 percent in just 30 minutes when using this type of connection. Additionally, BMW will provide three years of complimentary 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America charging stations with every new i5 purchase.

Fuel Economy & Real-World MPGe
The fuel economy estimates for the 2024 i5 have not yet been published by the EPA. Once we have the opportunity, we will test the 5-series on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route and include the results in this article. To find out more about the fuel economy of the 5-series, please visit the EPA’s website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The i5’s cabin offers the same level of spaciousness and luxury as the gasoline-powered 5-series. Despite this, the battery does not take up any room in the cabin, although the trunk space is slightly smaller compared to the 5-series. While leather upholstery remains available, BMW is introducing a new faux-leather option called Veganza for the i5, which adds a stylish touch to the sedan’s interior.
In addition, there is an option for glass interior controls that enhances the cabin’s sophistication. The eDrive40 model allows heated and ventilated front seats with a massage feature as an optional extra, while they are standard on the M60 xDrive model.
