Mercedes-Benz GLA Reviews 2023
The new GLA offers a range of powertrain options. One option is a 1.3-litre petrol engine that produces 161bhp and 250Nm torque. It is paired with a seven-speed DCT unit. Another option is a more powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine that generates 188bhp and 400Nm of peak torque. This option also has the choice of a four-wheel-drive setup and is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The GLA-class SUV is the stylish counterpart to the slightly more practical GLB-class. While the GLA may have less cabin and cargo space, it compensates with its attractive design, making it the preferred choice for those who prioritize style over functionality in an SUV.
The interior of the GLA is stylish and modern, featuring high-quality materials. It has a turbo-four engine with 221 horsepower that provides adequate power to both front and all four wheels. The subcompact crossover also offers composed handling. If you’re interested in a GLA model that offers exceptional performance, consider the more powerful AMG GLA45. However, if you’re looking for a fashionable mode of transportation with enough space and a touch of luxury and refinement, the GLA-class will meet your needs perfectly.

The GLA’s cabin is packed with numerous new features that are on par with its older siblings in terms of equipment. This includes a stunning dual-screen setup that consists of the MBUX infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster, both of which perform exceptionally well. The 10.25-inch HD Media display unit supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless charging, and also offers 64-colour ambient lighting.
In terms of upholstery, the brown open-pore walnut material is combined with Artico-DINAMICA in this AMG line variant. While it may seem like nit-picking, it’s worth mentioning that the GLA does not come with ventilated seats and only has C-type USB ports. Additionally, it would have been a pleasant surprise if wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were included.

While the AMG variant stands in a league of its own, the standard GLA models offer two engine options. The GLA 200 comes with a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine, while the 220d features a 2.0-litre diesel engine. The latter is paired with an eight-speed twin-clutch automatic gearbox and is available in both front-wheel-drive and top-spec 4MATIC versions like the one being tested here.
It delivers an impressive power output of 188bhp and a torque of 400Nm, which is available from as low as 1,600rpm. Although there is a slight clatter when starting the engine, it remains quiet at normal rpms and doesn’t penetrate into the cabin due to good NVH insulation. Furthermore, it offers refined performance as well.

The base model of the GLA comes with one petrol and one diesel engine. The petrol engine, which has a capacity of 1.3-litres, produces 161bhp and 250Nm of torque. On the other hand, the more powerful diesel engine has a capacity of 2.0-litres and generates 188bhp and 400Nm of torque. Furthermore, the diesel engine can be combined with all-wheel drive. The petrol version is paired with a seven-speed DCT transmission, while the diesel version utilizes an eight-speed automatic transmission.
In terms of appearance, the GLA has undergone several changes compared to the previous model. It is now taller and bigger, with increased ground clearance, which addresses the lack of SUV appeal in its predecessor. At the front, there is a horizontal grille with a single-slat design, accompanied by updated LED headlamps.
Although fog lamps are no longer present, the front bumper showcases a bone-like pattern and features a three-box bash plate at the bottom. The GLA rides on comfortable 18-inch alloy wheels that are enclosed by squared-off wheel arches. Moving to the rear, you will find familiar sleek LED tail lamps that taper towards the boot lid in the typical Mercedes fashion. The lower half of the car is adorned with heavy plastic cladding, complemented by a touch of chrome that adds a sporty touch to its overall look.

Additionally, the Progressive trims feature a combination of beige and black upholstery, complemented by an open walnut dashboard. Ride and Handling
The ride quality is not overly plush, but it is still quite comfortable, thanks to the well-calibrated suspension. When driving at low speeds, the car absorbs bumps effectively and does not crash through potholes. It even manages to minimize the impact on the suspension when encountering sharper edges. However, if you increase your speed, you might occasionally hear a thud when going over sharp-edged potholes if you’re not cautious. Despite having tall 19-inch alloys, this never feels alarming. Additionally, the car effortlessly clears all speed-breakers, indicating that you won’t have to worry about avoiding obstacles when utilizing its off-road mode. This feature is very useful for improved traction, and the 4MATIC system ensures that the car handles reliably.
