Mercedes-Benz GLB Reviews- Mercedes-Benz embodies a timeless question: is it more about aesthetics or functionality? The GLB-class is the more angular alternative to the GLA-class, however, whether this makes it more sophisticated or less stylish depends on individual preferences. Both Mercedes models utilize the same 221-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive can be added as an option, along with a wide range of features that can transform the interior from professional to vibrant with the help of an ambient lighting package that includes illuminated vents.
Although it doesn’t have as much horsepower as the AMG GLB35 (which is reviewed separately), the GLB-class still offers impressive driving dynamics that make it enjoyable and effortless to drive. In addition, the GLB’s square-shaped rear end provides it with a cargo-space advantage over the GLA-class. Furthermore, it can be equipped with an optional third row that is quite snug. While it may not be a miniature version of the G-class, the GLB is a strong contender among other small luxury crossovers like the BMW X2, Audi Q3, and Lexus NX.
Mercedes-Benz GLB Reviews 2023
Mercedes has enhanced the GLB-class for 2024 by incorporating revised bumpers, headlights, taillights, and an upgraded interior. The previously available 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen is now included as a standard feature, along with Mercedes’ latest software. Additionally, the AMG Line interior now comes as standard and includes a heated steering wheel. Beneath the surface enhancements, the GLB now boasts a new 48-volt hybrid-assist electrical system that has the potential to improve the GLB’s EPA estimates.
The GLB’s grille features the three-pointed star emblem and houses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Although a new 48-volt hybrid system has been introduced for the 2024 model, the overall performance remains unchanged. The engine is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. While we have not tested the new 48-volt system in the GLB, the previous all-wheel-drive version managed to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a quick time of 6.0 seconds without this setup. We did not find the GLB250 to possess particularly sporty characteristics, but its ride quality and handling are satisfactory and suitable for an SUV of this size.

The GLB-class also has dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof. As for its interior, it offers ample space with 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats. When the seats are folded down, the cargo space increases to 62 cubic feet, which is almost equivalent to that of the larger BMW X3 model.
Although the entry-level GLB-class lacks a luxurious interior, it does include power front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel as standard features. If you desire heated or ventilated seats, as well as a third row of seating, they will come at an additional cost. It is anticipated that many buyers will choose to enhance their GLB250 with sought-after luxury amenities like leather upholstery and ambient lighting for the interior.

Design
The GLB exhibits a striking resemblance to the Mercedes SUV design, appearing almost like a scaled-down version of the GLS. The prominent front end, elongated and level hood and roofline, boxy headlights, D-pillar, squared wheel arches, and even the segmented rear taillights are all reminiscent of the GLS. The proportions are also perfectly aligned. However, it distinguishes itself with a distinctive twist near the C-pillar that elevates the shoulder line at the back.
There are two options to choose from when it comes to the GLB – the Progressive Line and the AMG Line. These trims have different styles as well. The Progressive Line trim includes a dual-slat grille, a faux silver skid plate, chrome trim on the exterior, and 18-inch alloy wheels. On the other hand, the AMG Line package features a more pronounced bumper, a single-slat AMG-themed grille, and 19-inch AMG twin five-spoke alloy wheels.

Fuel Economy & Real-World MPG
The estimates for the 2024 GLB-class have not yet been released by the EPA. However, we anticipate a slight improvement over last year’s estimates due to the introduction of a new 48-volt electrical system. In 2023, the front-wheel-drive GLB had EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 23 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg combined. The all-wheel-drive version had similar ratings, except for a slightly lower estimated highway economy of 30 mpg.
These numbers were comparable to, but slightly lower than, the EPA-estimated mileage of the BMW X1. During our 75-mile highway fuel economy test route, last year’s GLB250 4Matic achieved better results than its EPA rating with a result of 32 mpg, surpassing a comparable X1 by 1 mpg. We will provide an update once the EPA releases its findings for the updated GLB’s powertrain.
