Toyota bZ4X Reviews On Road Price 2023 Mileage, Features, Engine, Performance, Design & Images

Toyota bZ4X Reviews- In the past, Toyota was highly regarded by environmentalists for its early versions of the Prius. However, the company has now earned a negative reputation among organizations like Greenpeace due to its resistance towards adopting electric vehicles. This reluctance is also evident in other Japanese brands and their alleged lobbying efforts. Consequently, the bZ4X must demonstrate that Toyota is committed to electric vehicles and that it is worth the anticipation. Locally, Tesla, Hyundai, and Kia have already outpaced Toyota in the mid-sized electric SUV market, while Ford and Nissan have done so in other markets as well.

The release of the Japanese EV has also been postponed locally by approximately 12 months, and it is now scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2023. The bZ4X, which we briefly test drove at Toyota Australia’s headquarters in Altona, was a UK-spec model that had not been registered. Toyota informed us that this model may not necessarily reflect the specifications of the local version. The bZ4X gained significant attention due to its well-publicized recall for loose wheel hub bolts, which posed a risk of the wheels detaching from the electric vehicle. Although recalls early in a product’s lifespan are not uncommon, this particular incident held significant symbolism and was considered inauspicious.

Toyota bZ4X Reviews 2023

Toyota is gearing up to make a comeback in the electric vehicle market with the introduction of the 2023 bZ4X crossover. This model stands out from Toyota’s gasoline-powered SUVs due to its edgy styling. Unlike their previous all-electric vehicle, the RAV4 EV, the bZ4X is available for purchase at Toyota dealerships across the country. It comes in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options, with the former being capable of delivering up to 252 miles per charge.

The bZ4X has joined a growing selection of non-luxury EV SUVs, such as the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, Ford Mustang Mach E, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, Tesla Model Y, and Volkswagen ID.4. However, during our testing, we found that its real-world highway range falls behind the others in this group. The bZ4X and Subaru Solterra have been jointly developed and share many similarities, although the Subaru model is priced higher and includes all-wheel drive as standard.

Features

The Toyota electric SUV comes equipped with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display, a digital driver’s display, wireless phone charging, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a nine-speaker JBL sound system. The standard version of the Toyota bZ4X has a single electric motor that powers the front wheels and produces 201 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel-drive models have two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear, each producing 107 horsepower and 124 lb-ft of torque.

This results in a combined output of 214 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. According to Toyota, the acceleration time for front-wheel-drive models is 7.1 seconds, while all-wheel-drive versions can achieve it in 6.5 seconds. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the range of the XLE FWD bZ4X variant at 252 miles. The range decreases slightly to 242 miles for XLE AWD variants. Limited models, which offer more features and larger wheels, provide a range of 228 miles with FWD and 222 miles with AWD. FWD models can charge at a rate of up to 150 kW, while AWD models charge at a maximum rate of 100 kW.

Performance

The standard setup for the bZ4X is a front-wheel-drive, single-motor system that provides 201 horsepower. This power output is identical to both the Kia Niro EV and the front-wheel-drive version of the Volkswagen ID.4. The all-wheel-drive variant of the bZ4X has two motors, but there is only a slight increase in power to 215 horsepower.

This is significantly lower than the all-wheel-drive ID.4 (295 horsepower) and the all-wheel-drive Hyundai Ioniq 5 (320 hp). During our initial test drive, we observed lively acceleration in both the front- and all-wheel drive versions. However, it should be noted that the bZ4X is not intended to outperform Tesla vehicles in drag races. On our test track, the most powerful dual-motor version of the bZ4X achieved a respectable but not particularly thrilling 6.4-second time to reach 60 mph.

Toyota bZ4X

The bZ4X provides a comfortable ride over bumps without feeling excessively soft, and its steering has a satisfactory level of responsiveness. While regenerative braking can be enhanced by pressing a button on the center console, the bZ4X falls short of providing true one-pedal driving functionality that we appreciate in other electric vehicles.

Charging & Battery Life

The two bZ4X powertrains come with batteries that are almost identical in size. The single-motor version has a 63.4-kWh battery pack, while the dual-motor model has a slightly larger 65.5-kWh pack. According to EPA estimates, the front-wheel-drive, single-motor model can travel approximately 242/252 miles (Limited/XLE), whereas the all-wheel-drive version offers a range of around 222/228 miles. However, our test of the dual motor model revealed a disappointing highway range of only 160 miles.

This result is on par with the Nissan Leaf, which has the lowest highway range among electric vehicles. On a Level 2 supply, the onboard charger with a capacity of 6.6 kW can fully charge the battery in about 9 hours. Alternatively, using a DC fast-charger, Toyota claims that it takes less than an hour to reach an 80 percent charge, with peak charging rates of 150 kW for front-wheel-drive variants and 100 kW for all-wheel-drive models. Additionally, buyers will receive one year of free charging at EVgo locations.

Fuel Economy & Real-World MPGe

The bZ4X achieves impressive city fuel efficiency of up to 131 MPGe, while it reaches a commendable 107 MPGe on the highway. However, during our evaluation on a 75-mph highway fuel economy test route, the dual-motor Limited test vehicle disappointingly only achieved 86 MPGe. For additional details regarding the bZ4X’s fuel economy, please refer to the EPA’s website.
