Aditya-L1 Successfully Performs Another Manoeuvre

Aditya-L1: The Trans-Lagrangean Point 1 Insertion (TL1I) manoeuvre was successfully completed by the Aditya-L1 spacecraft, according to an announcement made on Tuesday by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The spacecraft is currently on a trajectory that will bring it to the Sun-Earth L1 point. Additionally, the ISRO reported that it was the fifth time in a row that an object had been successfully moved on a trajectory towards another celestial body or location in space.

Aditya-L1 is India’s first solar mission to study the sun. It is a satellite that will be placed in a halo orbit around the Lagrange point L1, which is about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. The primary objective of Aditya-L1 is to observe the Sun’s corona and study its dynamics, as well as investigate the solar wind and magnetic fields. This mission will provide valuable insights into the processes that drive solar activity and help scientists better understand space weather and its impact on Earth.

The Aditya-L1 spacecraft had previously been launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Station in Andhra Pradesh. The main goals of India’s first solar mission are to gather scientific data and to reach a new milestone in the country’s solar research endeavours. Aditya-L1 has started gathering data for research. At distances greater than 50,000 km from Earth, the STEPS instrument’s sensors have started measuring supra-thermal and energetic ions and electrons. This information aids in the analysis of the behaviour of the particles that surround the Earth. The figure shows changes in the energetic particle environment that one of the units collected. The Aditya Solar Wind Particle Experiment (ASPEX) payload’s Supra Thermal and Energetic Particle Spectrometer (STEPS) instrument also began collecting data early.

TEPS is able to measure supra-thermal and energetic ions with energies ranging from 20 keV/nucleon to 5 MeV/nucleon as well as electrons with energies more than 1 MeV thanks to its six sensors that look in different directions. Understanding the behaviour of particles orbiting Earth, especially when the Earth’s magnetic field is present, depends on these measurements. On September 10, STEPS was turned on at a distance of more than 50,000 kilometres, or more than eight times the radius of the Earth. Data collection continued after the spacecraft underwent crucial instrument health checks until it travelled more than 50,000 kilometres from Earth.

The presented figure shows measurements taken by one of the STEPS units that show fluctuations in the energetic particle environment within the Earth’s magnetosphere and shows that each unit is operating within normal bounds. As Aditya-L1 moves closer to the Sun-Earth L1 point during its cruise phase, these observations will continue to be made. They will give important information about the origin, acceleration, and anisotropy of solar wind and other space weather phenomena.
