महायोगीश्वर दत्तात्रेय भगवान विष्णु के अवतार हैं। इनका अवतरण मार्गशीर्ष की पूर्णिमा को प्रदोष काल में हुआ। अतः इस दिन बड़े समारोहपूर्वक दत्त जयंती का उत्सव मनाया जाता है।

भगवान दत्तात्रेय के जन्म की गोपनीय कथा – श्रीमद्भभगवत में आया है कि पुत्र प्राप्ति की इच्छा से महर्षि अत्रि के व्रत करने पर ‘दत्तो मयाहमिति यद् भगवान्‌ स दत्तः’ मैंने अपने-आपको तुम्हें दे दिया -विष्णु के ऐसा कहने से भगवान विष्णु ही अत्रि के पुत्र रूप में अवतरित हुए और दत्त कहलाए। अत्रिपुत्र होने से ये आत्रेय कहलाते हैं।

दत्त और आत्रेय के संयोग से इनका दत्तात्रेय नाम प्रसिद्ध हो गया। इनकी माता का नाम अनसूया है, उनका पतिव्रता धर्म संसार में प्रसिद्ध है। पुराणों में कथा आती है, ब्रह्माणी, रुद्राणी और लक्ष्मी को अपने पतिव्रत धर्म पर गर्व हो गया। भगवान को अपने भक्त का अभिमान सहन नहीं होता तब उन्होंने एक अद्भुत लीला करने की सोची।

भक्त वत्सल भगवान ने देवर्षि नारद के मन में प्रेरणा उत्पन्न की। नारद घूमते-घूमते देवलोक पहुंचे और तीनों देवियों के पास बारी-बारी जाकर कहा- अत्रिपत्नी अनसूया के समक्ष आपको सतीत्व नगण्य है। तीनों देवियों ने अपने स्वामियों- विष्णु, महेश और ब्रह्मा से देवर्षि नारद की यह बात बताई और उनसे अनसूया के पातिव्रत्य की परीक्षा करने को कहा।
देवताओं ने बहुत समझाया परंतु उन देवियों के हठ के सामने उनकी एक न चली। अंततः साधुवेश बनाकर वे तीनों देव अत्रिमुनि के आश्रम में पहुंचे। महर्षि अत्रि उस समय आश्रम में नहीं थे। अतिथियों को आया देख देवी अनसूया ने उन्हें प्रणाम कर अर्घ्य, कंदमूलादि अर्पित किए किंतु वे बोले- हम लोग तब तक आतिथ्य स्वीकार नहीं करेंगे, जब तक आप हमें अपने गोद में बिठाकर भोजन नहीं कराती।

यह बात सुनकर प्रथम तो देवी अनसूया अवाक्‌ रह गईं किंतु आतिथ्य धर्म की महिमा का लोप न जाए, इस दृष्टि से उन्होंने नारायण का ध्यान किया। अपने पतिदेव का स्मरण किया और इसे भगवान की लीला समझकर वे बोलीं- यदि मेरा पातिव्रत्य धर्म सत्य है तो यह तीनों साधु छह-छह मास के शिशु हो जाएं। इतना कहना ही था कि तीनों देव छह मास के शिशु हो रुदन करने लगे।
तब माता ने उन्हें गोद में लेकर दुग्ध पान कराया फिर पालने में झुलाने लगीं। ऐसे ही कुछ समय व्यतीत हो गया। इधर देवलोक में जब तीनों देव वापस न आए तो तीनों देवियां अत्यंत व्याकुल हो गईं। फलतः नारद आए और उन्होंने संपूर्ण हाल कह सुनाया। तीनों देवियां अनसूया के पास आईं और उन्होंने उनसे क्षमा मांगी।

देवी अनसूया ने अपने पातिव्रत्य से तीनों देवों को पूर्वरूप में कर दिया। इस प्रकार प्रसन्न होकर तीनों देवों ने अनसूया से वर मांगने को कहा तो देवी बोलीं- आप तीनों देव मुझे पुत्र रूप में प्राप्त हों। तथास्तु- कहकर तीनों देव और देवियां अपने-अपने लोक को चले गए।कालांतर में यही तीनों देव अनसूया के गर्भ से प्रकट हुए।

कालांतर में यही तीनों देव अनसूया के गर्भ से प्रकट हुए। ब्रह्मा के अंश से चंद्रमा, शंकर के अंश से दुर्वासा तथा विष्णु के अंश से दत्तात्रेय श्रीविष्णु भगवान के ही अवतार हैं और इन्हीं के आविर्भाव की तिथि दत्तात्रेय जयंती के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है।

Mahayogishwar Dattatreya is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. His descent took place on the full moon of Margashirsha during the Pradosh period. Therefore, on this day, Dutt Jayanti is celebrated with great ceremonies.

In the Shrimadbhagavata it is said that on the fasting of Maharishi Atri with the desire of getting a son, ‘Datto Mayyamithi or Lord of Gods’, I gave myself to you – Lord Vishnu emerged as the son of Atri and Lord Datta as Vishnu said this. . Being Atriputra, he is called Atreya.

His Dattatreya name became famous by coincidence of Dutt and Atreya. His mother’s name is Anasuya, his virtuous religion is famous in the world. There is a legend in the Puranas, Brahmins, Rudrani and Lakshmi became proud of their husband religion. God could not bear the pride of his devotee then he thought of doing a wonderful Leela.

Devotee Vatsal Bhagavan inspired inspiration in the mind of Devarshi Narada. Narada roaming around reached Devlok and went in turn to the three goddesses and said – In front of Atripatni Anasuya, you have negligible negligence. The three goddesses told their masters – Vishnu, Mahesh and Brahma – about the devarshi Narada and asked them to test Anasuya’s patrimony.

The gods explained a lot, but they did not stand before the stubbornness of those goddesses. Eventually, all three of them reached the ashram of Dev Athrimuni by making them monks. Maharishi Atri was not in the ashram at that time. On seeing the guests, Devi Anasuya bowed to her and offered Arghya, Kandamooladi, but he said – We will not accept hospitality unless you make us sit on your lap and provide food.

Hearing this, Goddess Anasuya was unmoved at first but did not lose sight of the glory of hospitality religion, so she meditated on Narayana. She remembered her husband and considering it as a play of God, she said – If my religious religion is true, then these three sadhus should be children for six months. This much had to be said that the three devas started to become infants for six months.

Then Mata made him drink milk with her on his lap, then started swinging in the cradle. Some time passed like this. Here, when the three gods did not return to heaven, the three ladies became extremely distraught. As a result Narada came and told the whole situation. The three goddesses came to Ansuya and apologized to him.

Goddess Anasuya, by her virtue, made all the three devas in full form. In this way, being pleased, the three Gods asked Anasuya to ask for a bride, then the Goddess said – I can get all three of you in the form of a son. Saying Aastastu – the three gods and goddesses went to their respective worlds. Later on these three gods appeared from Anasuya’s womb.

Later, these three gods appeared from the womb of Anasuya. Moon from Brahma’s part, Durvasa from Shankar’s part and Dattatreya Srivishnu from Vishnu’s part are the incarnations of God and the date of his birth is known as Dattatreya Jayanti.
