महर्षि मार्कण्डेय बोले – सूर्य के पुत्र सावर्णि की उत्पत्ति की कथा विस्तारपूर्वक कहता हूँ सुनो, सावर्णि महामाया की कृपा से जिस प्रकार मन्वन्तर के स्वामी हुए, उसका भी हाल सुनो। पहले स्वारोचिष नामक राज्य था। वहाँ  के सुरथ नाम के चैत्रवंशी    राजा थे । वह प्रजा को अपने पुत्र के समान मानते थे तो भी कोलाविध्वंशी राजा उनके शत्रु बन गये। दुष्टों को दण्ड देने वाले राजा सुरथ की उनके साथ लड़ाई हुई, कोलाविध्वंसियों के संख्या में कम होने पर भी राजा सुरथ युद्ध में उनसे हार गए। तब वह अपने नगर में आ गये, केवल अपने देश का राज्य ही उनके पास रह गया और वह उसी देश के राजा होकर राज्य करने लगे किन्तु उनके शत्रुओं ने उन पर वहाँ आक्रमण किया। ( Durga Saptashati )

अपने नगर की ममता के आकर्षण से राजा अपने मन में सोचने लगे – पूर्वकाल में पूर्वजों ने जिस नगर का पालन किया था वह आज मेरे हाथ से निकल गया। मेरे दुष्ट एवं दुरात्मा मंत्री मेरे नगर की अब धर्म से रक्षा कर रहे होंगे या नहीं? मेरा प्रधान हाथी जो कि सदा मद की वर्षा करने वाला और शूरवीर था, मेरे वैरियों के वश में होकर न जाने क्या दुख भोग रहा होगा? मेरे आज्ञाकारी नौकर जो मेरी कृपा से धन और भोजन पाने से सदैव सुखी रहते थे और मेरे पीछे-पीछे चलते थे, वह अब निश्चय ही दुष्ट राजाओं का अनुसरण करते होगें तथा मेरे दुष्ट एवं दुरात्मा मंत्रियों द्वारा व्यर्थ ही धन को व्यय करने से संचित किया हुआ मेरा खजाना एक दिन अवश्य खाली हो जाएगा। इस प्रकार की बहुत सी बातें सोचता हुआ राजा निरन्तर दुखी रहने लगा। ( Durga Saptashati )राजा को बलहीन देखकर उसके दुष्ट मंत्रियों ने राजा की सेना और खजाना अपने अधिकार में कर लिया। राजा सुरथ अपने राज्याधिकार को हार कर शिकार खेलने के बहाने घोड़े पर सवार होकर वहाँ से एक घने  वन की ओर चले गये। उस वन में उन्होंने महर्षि मेधा का आश्रम देखा, वहाँ मेधा महर्षि अपने शिष्यों तथा मुनियों से सुशोभित बैठे हुए थे और वहाँ कितने ही हिंसक जीव परम शान्ति भाव से रहते थे। राजा सुरथ ने महर्षि मेधा को प्रणाम किया और महर्षि ने भी उनका उचित सत्कार किया। राजा सुरथ महर्षि के आश्रम में कुछ समय तक ठहरे। ( Durga Saptashati )

एक दिन राजा सुरथ ने महर्षि मेधा के आश्रम के निकट एक वैश्य को देखा, राजा ने उससे पूछा-भाई, तुम कौन हो? यहाँ तुम्हारे आने का क्या कारण है और तुम मुझे शोकग्रस्त अनमने से दिखाई देते हो इसका क्या कारण है? राजा के यह नम्र वचन सुन वैश्य ने महाराज सुरथ को प्रणाम करके कहा, वैश्य बोला- राजन! मेरा नाम समाधि है, मैं धनियों के कुल में उत्पन्न एक वैश्य हूँ, मेरे दुष्ट स्त्री-पुत्रादिकों ने लोभ से मेरा सब धन छीन लिया है और मुझे घर से निकाल दिया है। मैं इस तरह से दुखी होकर इस वन में चला आया हूँ और यहाँ रहता हुआ मैं इस बात को भी नहीं जानता कि अब घर में इस समय सब कुशल हैं या नहीं। ( Durga Saptashati )

यहाँ मैं अपने परिवार का आचरण संबंधी कोई समाचार भी नहीं पा सकता कि वह घर में इस समय कुशलपूर्वक हैं या नहीं। मैं अपने पुत्रों के संबंध में यह भी नहीं जानता कि वह सदाचारी हैं या दुराचार में फँसे हुए हैं। राजा बोले-जिस धन के लोभी स्त्री, पुत्रों ने तुम्हेंं घर से निकाल दिया है, फिर भी तुम्हारा चित्त उनसे क्यों प्रेम करता है। वैश्य ने कहा-मेरे विषय में आपका ऎसा कहना ठीक है, किंतु मेरा मन इतना कठोर नहीं है। यद्यपि उन्होंने धन के लोभ में पड़कर पितृस्नेह को त्यागकर मुझे घर से निकाल दिया है, तो भी मेरे मन में उनके लिए कठोरता नहीं आती। ( Durga Saptashati )

हे महामते! मेरा मन फिर भी उनमें क्यों फँस रहा है, इस बात को जानता हुआ भी मैं नहीं जान रहा, मेरा चित्त उनके लिए दुखी है। मैं उनके लिए लंबी-लंबी साँसे ले रहा हूँ, उन लोगों में प्रेम नाम को नहीं है, फिर भी ऎसे नि:स्नेहियों के लिए मेरा हृदय कठोर नहीं होता । महर्षि मार्कण्डेयजी ने कहा-हे ब्रह्मन्! इसके पश्चात महाराज सुरथ और वह वैश्य दोनों महर्षि मेधा के समीप गये और उनके साथ यथायोग्य न्याय सम्भाषण करके दोनों ने वार्ता आरम्भ की। राजा बोले-हे भगवन! मैं आपसे एक बात पूछना चाहता हूँ, सो आप कृपा करके मुझे बताइए, मेरा मन अधीन नहीं है, इससे मैं बहुत दुखी हूँ, राज्य, धनादिक की चिंता अभी तक मुझे बनी हुई है और मेरी यह ममता अज्ञानियों की तरह बढ़ती ही जा रही है और यह समाधि नामक वैश्य भी अपने घर से अपमानित होकर आया है, इसके स्वजनों ने भी इसे त्याग दिया है, स्वजनों से त्यागा हुआ भी यह उनसे हार्दिक प्रेम रखता है, इस तरह हम दोनों ही दुखी हैं। ( Durga Saptashati )

हे महाभाग! उन लोगों के अवगुणों को देखकर भी हम दोनों के मन में उनके लिए ममता-जनित आकर्षण उत्पन्न हो रहा है। हमें ज्ञान रहते हुए भी ऎसा क्यों है? अज्ञानी मनुष्यों की तरह हम दोनों में यह मूर्खता क्यों है? महर्षि मेधा ने कहा – विषम मार्ग का ज्ञान सब जन्तुओं को है, सबों के लिए विषय पृथक-पृथक होते हैं, कुछ प्राणी दिन में नहीं देखते और कुछ रात को, परन्तु कई जीव ऎसे हैं जो दिन तथा रात दोनों में देख सकते हैं। यह सत्य है कि मनुष्यों में ज्ञान प्रधान है किंतु केवल मनुष्य ही ज्ञानी नहीं होता, पशु पक्षी आदि भी ज्ञान रखते हैं। जैसे यह पशु पक्षी ज्ञानी हैं, वैसे ही मनुष्यों का ज्ञान है और जो ज्ञान मनुष्यों में वैसे ही पशु पक्षियों में है तथा अन्य बातें भी दोनों में एक जैसी पाई जाती है। ( Durga Saptashati )

ज्ञान होने पर भी इन पक्षियों की ओर देखो कि अपने भूख से पीड़ित बच्चों की चोंच में कितने प्रेम से अन्न के दाने डालते हैं। हे राजन! ऎसा ही प्रेम मनुष्यों में अपनी संतान के प्रति भी पाया जाता है। लोभ के कारण अपने उपकार का बदला पाने के लिए मनुष्य पुत्रों की इच्छा करते हैं ।और इस प्रकार मोह के गढ्ढे में गिरा करते हैँ। भगवान श्रीहरि की जो माया है, उसी से यह संसार मोहित हो रहा है। इसमें आश्चर्य की कोई बात नहीं । क्योंकि वह भगवान विष्णु की योगनिन्द्रा है, यह माया ही तो है जिसके कारण संसार मोह में जकड़ा हुआ है । यही महामाया भगवती देवी ज्ञानियों के चित्त को बलपूर्वक खींचकर मोह में डाल देती है और उसी के द्वारा सम्पूर्ण जगत की उत्पत्ति होती है। ( Durga Saptashati )

यही भगवती देवी प्रसन्न होकर मनुष्य को मुक्ति प्रदान करती है। यही संसार के बन्धन का कारण है । तथा सम्पूर्ण ईश्वरों की भी स्वामिनी है। महाराज सुरथ ने पूछा-भगवन! वह देवी कौन सी है, जिसको आप महामाया कहते हैं? हे ब्रह्मन! वह कैसे उत्पन्न हुई और उसका कार्य क्या है? उसके चरित्र कौन-कौन से हैं। प्रभो! उसका जैसा प्रभाव हो, जैसा स्वरूप हो वह सब ही कृपाकर मुझसे कहिये, मैं आपसे सुनना चाहता हूँ। महर्षि मेधा बोले-राजन्! वह देवी तो नित्यस्वरुपा है, उसके द्वारा यह संसार रचा गया है। तब भी उसकी उत्पत्ति अनेक प्रकार से होती है। वह सब आप मुझसे सुनो, वह देवताओ का कार्य सिद्ध करने के लिए प्रकट होती है, उस समय वह उत्पन्न हुई कहलाती है। ( Durga Saptashati )

संसार को जलमय करके जब भगवान विष्णु योगनिद्रा का आश्रय लेकर शेषशैय्या पर सो रहे थे तब मधु-कैटभ नाम के दो असुर उनके कानों के मैल से प्रकट हुए और वह श्रीब्रह्मा जी को मारने के लिए तैयार हो गये। श्रीब्रह्माजी ने जब उन दोनो को अपनी ओर आते देखा और यह भी देखा कि भगवान विष्णु योगनिद्रा का आश्रय लेकर सो रहे हैं तो वह उस समय श्रीभगवान को जगाने के लिये उनके नेत्रों में निवास करने वाली योगनिद्रा की स्तुति करने लगे। श्रीब्रह्मा जी ने कहा-हे देवी! तुम ही स्वाहा, तुम ही स्वधा और तुम ही वषटकार हो। स्वर भी तुम्हारा ही स्वरुप है, तुम ही जीवन देने वाली सुधा हो। ( Durga Saptashati )

नित्य अक्षर प्रणव में अकार, उकार, मकार इन तीनों में माताओं के रुप में तुम ही स्थित हो। इनके अतिरिक्त जो बिन्दपथ अर्धमात्रा है, जिसका कि विशेष रूप से उच्चारण नहीं किया जाता है । हे देवी! वह भी तुम ही हो। हे देवी! संध्या, सावित्री तथा परमजननी तुम ही हो। तुम इस विश्व को धारण करने वाली हो, तुमने ही इस जगत की रचना की है और तुम ही इस जगत का पालन करने वाली हो। तुम ही कल्प के अन्त में सबको भक्षण करने वाली हो। हे देवी! जगत की उत्पत्ति के समय तुम सृष्टि रूपा होती हो, पालन काल में स्थित रूपा हो और कल्प के अन्त में संहाररूप धारण कर लेती हो। तुम ही महाविद्या, महामाया, महामेधा, महारात्रि और मोहरात्रि हो। श्री, ईश्वरी और बोधस्वरूपा बुद्धि भी तुम ही हो । लज्जा, पुष्टि, तुष्टि, शान्ति और क्षमा भी तुम ही हो। ( Durga Saptashati )

तुम खड्ग धारिणी, शूल धारिणी घोररूपा तथा गदा, चक्र, शंख और धनुष को धारण करने वाली हो। बाण, भुशुण्डी और परिघ यह भी तुम्हारे ही अस्त्र हैं। तुम सौम्य और सौम्यतर हो-यही नहीं बल्कि जितनी भी सौम्य तथा सुन्दर वस्तुएँ इस संसार में हैं, उन सबसे बढ़कर सुन्दर तुम हो। पर और अपर सबसे पर रहने वाली सुन्दर तुम ही हो। हे सर्वस्वरुपे देवी! जो भी सत ,असत पदार्थ हैं और उनमें जो शक्ति है, वह तुम ही हो। ऎसी अवस्था में भला तुम्हारी स्तुति कौन कर सकता है! इस संसार की सृष्टि, पालन और संहार करने वाले जो भगवान हैं, उनको भी जब तुमने निद्रा के वशीभूत कर दिया है तो फिर तुम्हारी स्तुति कौन कर सकता है? मुझे, भगवान विष्णु तथा भगवान शंकर को भी शरीर धारण कराने वाली तुम ही हो। तुम्हारी स्तुति करने की शक्ति किसमें में है? हे देवी! तुम तो अपने इन उदार प्रभावों के कारण ही प्रशंसनीय हो। मधु और कैटभ जो भयंकर असुर है इन्हें मोह में डाल दो और श्रीहरि भगवान विष्णु को भी जल्दी जगा दो और उनमें इनको मार डालने की बुद्धि भी उत्पन्न कर दो। महर्षि मेधा बोले-हे राजन्! जब श्रीब्रह्माजी ने देवी से इस प्रकार स्तुति करके भगवान को जगाने तथा मधु और कैटभ को मारने के लिए कहा तो वह भगवान श्रीविष्णु के नेत्र, मुख, नासिका, बाहु, हृदय और वक्षस्थल से निकल ब्रह्माजी के सामने खड़ी हो गई। उनका ऎसा करना था कि भगवान श्रीहरि तुरन्त जाग उठे और दोनो असुरों को देखा, जो कि अत्यन्त बलवान तथा पराक्रमी थे और मारे क्रोध के जिनके नेत्र लाल हो रहे थे और जो ब्रह्माजी का वध करने के लिए तैयार थे, तब क्रुद्ध हो उन दोनो दुरात्मा असुरों के साथ भगवान श्रीहरि पूरे पाँच हजार वर्ष तक लड़ते रहे। ( Durga Saptashati )

एक तो वह अत्यन्त बलवान तथा पराक्रमी थे दूसरे महामाया ने भी उन्हें मोह में डाल रखा था। अत: वह श्री भगवान से कहने लगे-हम दोनो तुम्हारी वीरता से अत्यन्त प्रसन्न है, तुम हमसे कोई वर माँगो! भगवान ने कहा-यदि तुम मुझ पर प्रसन्न हो तो अब तुम मेरे हाथों से मर जाओ। बस इतना सा ही वर मैं तुमसे माँगता हूँ। यहाँ दूसरे वर से क्या प्रयोजन है। महर्षि मेधा बोले-इस तरह से जब वह धोखे में आ गये और अपने चारों ओर जल ही जल देखा तो भगवान श्रीहरि से कहने लगे-जहाँ पर जल न हो, सूखी जमीन हो, उसी जगह हमारा वध कीजिए। महर्षि मेधा कहते है, तथास्तु कहकर भगवान श्रीहरि ने उन दोनों को अपनी जाँघ पर लिटाकर उन दोनो के सिर काट डाले। इस तरह से यह देवी श्रीब्रह्माजी के स्तुति करने पर प्रकट हुई थी, अब तुम से उनके प्रभाव का वर्णन करता हूँ । सो सुनो। दूसरा अध्याय पढने के लिए यहाँ क्लिक करें ।
