कर्ण पर्व के अन्तर्गत कोई उपपर्व नहीं है और अध्यायों की संख्या 96 है। इस पर्व में द्रोणाचार्य की मृत्यु के पश्चात कौरव सेनापति के पद पर कर्ण का अभिषेक, कर्ण के सेनापतित्व में कौरव सेना द्वारा भीषण युद्ध, पाण्डवों के पराक्रम, शल्य द्वारा कर्ण का सारथि बनना, अर्जुन द्वारा कौरव सेना का भीषण संहार, कर्ण और अर्जुन का युद्ध, कर्ण के रथ के पहिये का पृथ्वी में धँसना, अर्जुन द्वारा कर्णवध, कौरवों का शोक, शल्य द्वारा दुर्योधन को सान्त्वना देना आदि वर्णित है।
कर्ण का सेनापतित्व
द्रोणाचार्य की मृत्यु के बाद कर्ण को कौरवों का सेनापति बनाया गया। कर्ण ने प्रतिज्ञा की कि मैं पूरी शक्ति से पांडवों का संहार करूँगा।
सोलहवें दिन का युद्ध
कर्ण ने अपनी सेना का व्यूह रचा। इसी समय नकुल कर्ण के सामने आए। कर्ण ने नकुल को घायल कर दिया। किंतु कुंती को दी हुई अपनी प्रतिज्ञा को याद करके नकुल का वध नहीं किया। दूसरी ओर अर्जुन संसप्तकों से लड़ रहे थे। कृष्ण ने अर्जुन से कहा कि तुम्हें कर्ण से युद्ध करना है। तभी सूर्यास्त हो गया तथा युद्ध बंद हो गया। रात्रि में कर्ण ने दुर्योधन से कहा कि अर्जुन के पास विशाल रथ, कुशल सारथी, गांडीव, अक्षय तूणीर आदि हैं। हमें इन सबकी चिंता नहीं, पर हमें एक कुशल सारथी की जरूरत है। कृष्ण की जरूरत है। कृष्ण के समान ही महाराज शल्य इस कला में निपुण हैं। यदि वे मेरे रथ का संचालन करें तो युद्ध में अवश्य सफलता मिलेगी। शल्य ने कर्ण का सारथी बनना स्वीकार कर लिया, पर कहा कि मुझे अपनी जुबान पर भरोसा नहीं है। कहीं कर्ण मेरी बात से नाराज़ होकर कुछ उलटा न कर बैठे, मुझे इसी बात का डर है। शल्य ने कर्ण का सारथी होना स्वीकार कर लिया।

सत्रहवें दिन का युद्ध
प्रातःकाल कर्ण और अर्जुन आमने-सामने आ डटे। इसी समय कर्ण ने देखा कि भीम कौरव-सेना का संहार कर रहे हैं। भीम ने कर्ण पर भी एक बाण छोड़ा, जिससे कर्ण को मूर्च्छा आ गई। यह देख शल्य रथ को भगा ले गए।
दुशासन-वध
कर्ण का रथ अदृश्य होते ही भीम और भी तेज गति से कौरवों का संहार करने लगे। दुर्योधन ने दुशासन को भीम का सामना करने लिए भेजा। दोनों में भीषण संग्राम छिड़ गया। मौक़ा देखकर भीम ने दुशासन के सिर पर गदा से प्रहार किया, उसके हाथ उखाड़ लिये तथा अपनी प्रतिज्ञा के अनुसार उसकी छाती फाड़कर उसका रक्त पीने लगे। इसी समय कर्ण की मूर्च्छा जागी। उन्होंने दुबारा युद्ध-क्षेत्र में प्रवेश किया और युधिष्ठिर को घायल कर दिया। उनका सारथी उनका रथ भगा ले गया। उधर अर्जुन संसप्तकों का संहार करके लौटे तो पता चला कि युधिष्ठिर रण-क्षेत्र छोड़कर चले गए हैं। अर्जुन उन्हें देखने शिविर में चले गए। युधिष्ठिर पीड़ा से तड़प रहे थे, उन्होंने अर्जुन को जली-कटी सुनाई। अर्जुन ने भी तलवार निकाल ली, पर कृष्ण ने दोनों को शांत किया।
कर्ण का निधन
आज अर्जुन का सीधा मुक़ाबला कर्ण से था। वे एक-दूसरे के बाणों को काट रहे थे। अर्जुन ने कर्ण के सारथी शल्य को घायल कर दिया। कर्ण ने अग्नि-बाण छोड़ा तो अर्जुन ने जल-बाण। कर्ण ने वायु-अस्त्र चलाकर बादलों को उड़ा दिया। अर्जुन ने नागास्त्र छोड़ा, जिसके उत्तर में कर्ण ने गरुड़ास्त्र। कर्ण के इस अस्त्र की काट अर्जुन के पास “नारायणास्त्र” थी, परंतु मनुष्य-युद्ध में वर्जित होने के कारण अर्जुन ने उसे नहीं छोड़ा। कर्ण ने एक दिव्य बाण छोड़ा तो कृष्ण ने घोड़ों को घुटनों के बल झुका दिया। इसी समय कर्ण के रथ का पहिया ज़मीन में धँस गया। कर्ण ने धर्म युद्ध के अनुसार कुछ देर बाण न चलाने की प्रार्थना की, मगर अर्जुन ने कहा कि अभिमन्यु को मारते समय तुम्हारा धर्म कहाँ गया था। कर्ण ने अर्जुन की छाती में एक ऐसा बाण मारा जिससे वे अचेत से हो गए तथा इसी बीच अपने रथ का पहिया निकालने लगे। थोड़ी देर में अर्जुन को होश आया। कर्ण को निहत्था देखकर कृष्ण ने अर्जुन से कहा कि यही समय है कर्ण पर बाण चलाओ नहीं तो कर्ण का वध नहीं कर पाओगे। अर्जुन ने वैसा ही किया। कर्ण का सिर धड़ से अलग हो गया। कर्ण के मरते ही कौरवों में हाहाकार मच गया। रात को दुर्योधन चिंताग्रस्त था। कृपाचार्य ने समझाया कि अब पांडवों से संधि कर ली जाए, पर दुर्योधन अभी भी युद्ध के पक्ष में था। दुर्योधन ने कहा कि अभी आप हैं, अश्वत्थामा हैं। मैं चाहता हूँ कि मामा शल्य को सेनापति बनाया जाए। शल्य ने सेनापति पद स्वीकार कर लिया।

Seventeenth day war
In the morning Karna and Arjun came face to face. At the same time Karna saw that Bhima is killing the Kaurava-Sena. Bhima also released an arrow on Karna, causing Karna to faint. Seeing this, the surgeons drove the chariot away.
Slaughter
As soon as Karna’s chariot became invisible, Bhima started killing the Kauravas at an even faster rate. Duryodhana sent Dushasan to confront Bhima. A fierce struggle broke out in both. Seeing the occasion, Bhima hit the head of Dushasan with mace, uprooted his hands and tearing his chest as per his promise, started drinking his blood. At the same time Karna’s unconsciousness awakened. He again entered the battlefield and wounded Yudhishthira. His chariot drove away his chariot. Karna passed away

There was an outcry among the Kauravas as soon as Karna died. Duryodhana was worried at night. Kripacharya explained that now treaty with the Pandavas, but Duryodhana was still in favor of war. Duryodhana said that you are now, Ashwatthama. I want Mama Shalya to be made the general. Surgery accepted the post of general.
