The collective name for central police organizations in India that fall under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).[2] These are technically paramilitary forces that were formerly known as Central Para-Military Forces (CPMF). India has used the term “central armed police forces” instead of “paramilitary” since 2011. These forces are in charge of border security and internal security.[3] CAPF is further divided into three groups: Assam Rifles, Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) are the border guarding forces. Internal Security Forces, including the Central Reserve Police Force and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF); and the National Security Guard’s Special Task Force
Previously referred to as Central Para-Military Forces, Central Police Organizations, Para-Military Forces (PMF), and Central Police Forces (CPF) interchangeably, CAPF is now known as CAPF. A circular adopted by the Indian government in 2011 changed the names of the forces to Central Armed Police Forces under the Ministry of Home Affairs, adopting a uniform nomenclature. Since AR was under the operational control of the Indian Army and NSG personnel were entirely deputed from the Indian Army and other CAPFs, the new nomenclature only covered five forces at first: BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, and SSB.
Since the term “paramilitary” is used to refer to militant organizations in some nations, the name change was made for political reasons to enhance the force’s international image. The Ministry currently includes all seven forces in the CAPF definition. There are three further subcategories of CAPF, Assam Rifles (AR), Border Security Force (BSF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) are the border guarding forces. Forces for Internal Security: the Central Reserve Police Force and the Central Industrial Security Force and the National Security Guard’s Special Task Force.
