One year prior to India’s declaration of independence from British rule, “Mother Teresa & Me” opens in Kolkata. At the beginning of the film, Mother Teresa is in a frantic state as she tries to protect herself from rioters who are crawling on a street that is littered with bodies and are desperately looking for food for 300 girls who are starving. A Muslim rioter calmly and menacingly points a sword at Mother Teresa. Nevertheless, a Hindu rioter steps in just in time to stop the Mother from being hurt. The film begins with this moving and metaphorical scene. However, the fact that the film does not maintain the same level of intensity throughout is disheartening. Although there are sporadic sparks, the film does not always engage. The story “Mother Teresa & Me” is fascinating and full of peculiarities.

Mother Teresa’s early years in India, during which she expressed her desire to work outside the convent, are depicted in the film. The Missionaries of Charity are an important part of the story, but the movie also explains how Nirmal Hriday came to be. Along with Mother Teresa’s journey, the parallel story of Kavita, a young violinist in the UK, also unfolds.
