Cricket Asian Games 2010
Cricket made its debut at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China, in the shortest format possible for both men and women: Twenty20. The Guanggong International Cricket Stadium, which was constructed expressly for the Asian Games, served as the site for all of the games. Nine teams competed in the men’s competition, including second-string sides from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, three Test-playing nations.
One of the standout matches in the competition featured Pakistan facing China in the men’s category. Pakistan achieved a remarkable score of 183/1, securing a convincing victory over China by a margin of 128 runs. Khalid Latif, Pakistan’s top run-scorer in the tournament, played a pivotal role by scoring an unbeaten 103, marked by five sixes. This innings marked the first century in the history of Asian Games cricket.
Following the group stage and knockout rounds, Bangladesh and Afghanistan emerged as the finalists in the men’s event. Under the leadership of Mohammad Ashraful, Bangladesh emerged victorious, claiming the tournament title and securing the country’s inaugural gold medal at the Asian Games. Meanwhile, Pakistan secured the bronze by defeating Sri Lanka.
In the eight-team women’s tournament, the Pakistan women’s cricket team secured the gold medal by defeating Bangladesh, while Japan secured the bronze.
Pakistan women’s captain, Sana Mir, acknowledged the absence of the Indian team as a significant advantage, stating, “Obviously, not having the Indians was a big plus for us because we were the most experienced team in the competition in their absence.” She further expressed satisfaction with the win, emphasizing its impact on boosting confidence and pride among the team members.

Cricket at Asian Games 2014
Cricket featured as one of the 36 medal sports at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, the Republic of Korea, with matches played in the popular T20 format. Both the men’s and women’s competitions were expanded to include 10 teams each, but India chose to skip the tournament once again.
Similar to the previous edition, a dedicated cricket stadium, Yeonhui Cricket Ground, was constructed for the event, hosting all cricket matches. Bangladesh set a tournament record by scoring 224/9 against Kuwait. In response, Kuwait was dismissed for a mere 21, resulting in a resounding 203-run victory for Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka clinched the gold medal in the men’s event, defeating Afghanistan in the final. Defending champions Bangladesh faced elimination in the semi-finals against Sri Lanka due to rain interference, with the outcome determined by a coin toss. Despite the setback, Bangladesh secured the bronze by defeating Hong Kong in the third-place match.
Meanwhile, Pakistan successfully defended their title in the women’s tournament, triumphing over Bangladesh in the gold medal play-off. The match was decided using the Duckworth-Lewis method, a system for calculating target scores in rain-affected matches. Sri Lanka secured the bronze by defeating China.
Notably, the women’s tournament witnessed the first-ever five-wicket haul at the Asian Games. Xiang Ruan of China claimed 5/9 to dismiss the South Korea women’s team for 49, leading to China’s victory by eight wickets.
