U19 T20 World Cup Final Highlights India Make History
There is something about winning the first edition of the tournament held in India and South Africa. The Indian women’s team has won the inaugural edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup by defeating England in the final at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.
The Shafali Verma-led side produced a comprehensive performance in the final, defeating England by a huge margin of 7 wickets. After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, India restricted England to a total of just 68 as the bowlers put up a flawless performance against a hapless English batting unit.
India got off to a dream start as Tita Sadhu and Archana Devi wreaked havoc on England’s batting unit as they both picked up two wickets each to throw the Grace Scrivens-led side in all kinds of trouble. The new ball pair’s effort was ably supported by the bowlers, with Parshvi Chopra taking a brace. Captain Shefali, Mannat Kashyap and Sonam Yadav took one wicket each, while Tiwari was run out on a direct hit.
Tiwary and Trisha both scored 24 runs to take India towards a safe target. Trisha was dismissed for three while Tiwary remained unbeaten and also scored the winning runs.
This is the first ICC title won by an Indian women’s team. The senior side had previously lost in the finals of the 2005 and 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cups and also tasted defeat in the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup summit clash against Australia. Shafali and Richa Gosha were part of the team that fell at the MCG three years ago.
