About World Weightlifting Championships
The IWF’s predecessor organization was established in 1905, but World Championship competitions began before that. Edward Lawrence Levy of England won the first officially recognized World Championship event in 1891.
The weightlifting competition known as the 2022 World Weightlifting Championships took place in December 2022 in Bootá, Colombia. It was originally supposed to take place in Chongqing, China, but COVID-19 measures in China changed this in March 2022. In April 2022, the new location was announced. Colombia hosted the World Weightlifting Championships for the first time. The competition was a way to get ready for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. A ban imposed as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine prevented weightlifters from Russia and Belarus from competing. After the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) tightened its anti-doping regulations, North Korea also withdrew from competition.
