Mini Cooper SE Reviews On Road Price 2024 Mileage, Features, Engine, Performance, Design & Images

Mini Cooper SE Reviews- Introducing the 2024 Cooper Electric, Mini is making a bold statement by prioritizing the electric variant over the gasoline-powered Cooper. While maintaining the presence of a gasoline model, Mini is showcasing its commitment to electric vehicles. The new Cooper Electric combines modern and vintage elements, paying homage to Mini’s history while sporting a stylish new look.

Similar to its predecessor, this version will feature a front-wheel drive powered by a single electric motor, but with an upgraded battery for an extended driving range. Globally, two versions will be available: the 184-hp Cooper E and the 218-hp Cooper SE. However, it remains uncertain if both models will be offered in our region. Drawing inspiration from its past, Mini has also revamped the car’s interior with a prominent circular infotainment display positioned at the center of the dashboard, contributing to its distinct cabin design.

Mini Cooper SE Reviews 2024

The foundation of the Cooper SE is BMW’s UKL platform, which is also utilized for its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts. The electric variant increases the weight by 145 kilograms compared to the 3-door Cooper S hatchback because of the installation of a substantial T-shaped battery beneath the cabin. However, despite this weight gain, the overall weight distribution alters as the electric motor is actually lighter than the combustion engine. Moreover, by positioning the battery in this manner, it lowers the Mini’s center of gravity (CG) by 30mm, resulting in enhanced handling and maneuverability when compared to the already nimble ICE Cooper S.

Whenever you slow down, the car’s battery uses some of the kinetic energy to generate electrical energy and recharge itself. There are two levels of regenerative braking available – the first level provides a natural deceleration that gradually reduces speed, while the second level is more aggressive and feels similar to strong braking. In both modes, one-pedal driving is possible, allowing the car to come to a complete stop without needing to press the brake pedal.

Engine

The Mini Cooper SE electric vehicle is equipped with a 32.6kWh battery pack that generates 181bhp and 270Nm of torque. This battery powers the car, allowing it to accelerate from 0-100kmph in 7.3 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 150kmph. When fully charged, the battery has a range of 270km (WLTP certified). The model comes with an 11kW AC wall-box charger, which takes approximately 2.5 hours to charge the battery from 0-80 percent. Additionally, customers have the option to use a 50kW DC fast charger, capable of charging the battery from 0-80 percent in just 36 minutes.

Design

Upon initial inspection, the new Mini Cooper Electric appears quite similar to its predecessor. This is expected given the iconic nature of the model, but it has undergone thorough modernization to maintain a fresh appearance. The front end now boasts a smoother and simpler design compared to the previous model, with fewer vents in the lower bumper. The round headlights remain a staple feature, while a body-colored strip has been added across the grille.

The side profile closely resembles that of previous Mini models, featuring short overhangs and a sporty wheel-at-each-corner stance, distinguishing it from vehicles like the Fiat 500e. The most significant change can be seen at the rear end, where new triangular LED tail lights have been introduced. These lights still incorporate the Union Jack motif, albeit in a slightly simplified form.

Interior

The Mini Cooper SE electric features a 5.5-inch colored MID, an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, sport seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a Nappa leather steering wheel within its interiors.

EV Motor & Power

The Cooper E models at the entry-level are equipped with a 181-hp electric motor, whereas SE models have a more powerful one that produces 215 horsepower. We had the opportunity to test a prototype of the latter and were impressed by its dynamic handling and quick acceleration. Mini has not yet confirmed if both models will be available in the United States, but if only one is chosen, our speculation (and preference) is for the more powerful SE.

According to Mini, the SE can reach 62 mph in just 6.7 seconds. Furthermore, there might be an even more powerful version with dual-motor all-wheel drive and an All4 badge that could be added to the lineup later, boasting 313 horsepower. Additionally, there are rumors about a high-performance trim called John Cooper Works.

Charging & Battery Life

The Cooper E is equipped with a battery pack that has a capacity of 28.9 kWh, while the SEs come with a larger pack of 58.4 kWh. These battery packs are expected to provide a range of approximately 200 miles on a single charge. As soon as we have the opportunity, we will conduct a test of the new Mini Electric on our fuel-economy route at a speed of 75 mph. We will then update this article with the results of the test.

Comfort & Cargo

Mini has made some notable improvements to the interior of the Cooper this time. The car now features higher-quality materials and a more simplified design. The designers took inspiration from the original 1959 Mini and aimed for a more stripped-back aesthetic. However, they have still managed to incorporate modern conveniences into the design. For instance, there are LED lights hidden behind the textile dash pad that light up when the car is started.

These ambient lights also change color depending on the drive mode and infotainment theme. Additionally, there is a row of toggle switches that provide easy access to commonly used controls, which is a signature feature of Mini cars. The panel itself has a contemporary appearance, giving it a more updated look compared to the previous model. Despite being similar in size to its predecessor, the new Cooper’s cabin feels more spacious and has an overall airier feel.
